President Biden addressed the nation from the Oval Office, using his speech to denounce Islamophobia and antisemitism following the recent killing of a Palestinian-American boy and the rising violence in the aftermath of terrorist attacks in Israel.
During his primetime speech, Biden discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict and Ukraine’s ongoing war against Russia, emphasizing that supporting both Israelis and Ukrainians is in America’s interest. However, he also acknowledged the fear that has gripped Muslim and Jewish communities due to the recent violence in Israel.
Biden expressed concern for Jewish families who fear being targeted and Muslims, Arabs, and Palestinian-Americans who are experiencing rising Islamophobia. He noted the parallels with the post-9/11 era, where distrust and discrimination were prevalent.
The president specifically mentioned the tragic killing of Wadea Al-Fayoume, a 6-year-old in Illinois, who was stabbed to death in an attack fueled by hatred of Muslims. Biden called for unequivocal denunciation of antisemitism and Islamophobia and assured those who are hurting that they belong and are a part of America.
After his address, the White House released a statement mentioning that the president and the first lady had spoken with Al-Fayoume’s family to express their condolences and commitment to opposing hate and violence against Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims.
Biden’s speech followed his visit to Israel, where he met with government officials, survivors of Hamas attacks, and announced humanitarian aid for Gaza, while reaffirming U.S. support for Israel as it prepares for a military offensive. The Israel-Hamas conflict has resulted in numerous casualties on both sides, with thousands of lives affected by the violence.
